Professional Internet Case Simulation (PICS)
MDDS CE Committee Chaiman:
Dr. Gene Bloom
| MDDS has developed a new groundbreaking format of professional continuing education for dental professionals: interactive patient case simulations. These clinical cases are Internet-based and available 24 hours a day. Each Professional Internet Case Simulation (PICS) program presents practitioners with real case challenges developed by esteemed clinicians. The PICS format includes unique features not seen in any other online CE course. Some of these features include: images and x-rays with “zoom” capabilities, virtual articulator, equilibration-in-motion, interactive key principles and a digital library. Each case utilizes video patient and case author interviews, the ability to chat with other PICS subscribers and case authors and an extensive resource guide for each topic. |
Oral Lesion Mystery
Picture this...it's four o'clock and you are seated at your virtual desk in your virtual office when you receive a biopsy report from the Oral Pathologist confirming your suspicions -- one of your three patients has a dangerous oral lesion. Visually all your patients’ lesions look similar; by using the resources located on your virtual desk you review the clinical data for all three patients. All the clues to solve the mystery are hidden within the data, now the challenge is to determine which patient has the serious problem - and what lesions do the other two patients have?
‘Oral Lesion Mystery’ is an interactive patient case simulation wherein practitioners must determine which of three patients has a dangerous oral lesion. The case begins in a virtual office with a report from an oral pathologist. You will review patient data while gathering clues to help solve the mystery using digital intra-oral images, patient charts and video patient interviews. Once your clinical judgment decisions have been made, and you solved the mystery, you will visit the resource section that includes articles and video commentary, along with a simulated phone consult with Dr. Gould.

TUTORIALS
We have produced several screencast tutorials that illustrate how to navigate and use specific features of the simulation program. You may want to view all of the tutorials before getting started or review the ones where you need specific instruction. Each tutorial shows the interface screen in action and includes audio narration so make your computer sound is turned on. Click on each link to get started. At the end of each tutorial you may either replay it or close the tutorial window to view another. Let us know if you would like any additional tutorials. We're here to help you have an interesting and informative experience!
THE OFFICE - this tutorial shows how to navigate and utilize the patient information located on the private office desktop.
CLINICAL EXAM SUMMARIES - the tutorial shows you how to access the patient exam information, and use Flashpaper.
INTRAORAL IMAGES - shows you how to view the patient images using zoom technology to see them as never before.
PATIENT INTERVIEWS - this screencast demonstrates how to use the clinical patient interview interface, and view the patient videos.
HINTS and NOTES - learn how to obtain valuable 'hints' regarding the three patient cases, and how to record your own findings in the Notes section.
KEY PRINCIPLES and DIGITAL LIBRARY- this tutorial illustrates how to access additional background information about the oral lesions discussed in the mystery simulation. It also shows you how to utilize the 'library' and print out important documents.
CE QUIZ - this tutorial demonstrates how to access the quiz, and go back to the patient data for information that will help you answer the questions.
PATHOLOGY CONSULT - once you've solved the mystery case, this simulated consult provides you with valuable insight from the case author about the three oral lesions.
